Info
RecycleBot is a research-project and consists of a six-armed collaborative robot for the automated sorting of plastic waste in lightweight packaging sorting facilities. The system aims to increase recycling rates by integrating machine learning–based material classification and sorting optimization into existing plants. Its sensor setup is based on an RGB camera for real-time acquisition of the material stream on conveyor belts. Key use cases include the removal of contaminants and the targeted separation of valuable materials during continuous operation.

This exhibition presents a compact representation of the industrial waste-sorting setup developed within the research project RecycleBot. It demonstrates the core principles of robotic sorting at a reduced scale using a small robot arm (MiRobot). The setup illustrates basic automated sorting processes and serves as a simplified model of an industrial system.

To provide real-world context, the exhibition includes looped video material of waste streams from recycling facilities, offering insight into the complexity and variability of actual sorting environments. In addition, a short presentation addresses the broader background of the project, explains why robotic systems are used in waste sorting, and answers more in-depth technical questions.
